Plains Vintage Railway (Ashburton, Canterbury) The Plains was officially opened to the public in 1973. From the first seeds that were sown at the end of 1968 when the former Tinwald to Mt Somers Branchline was closed, a genuine pioneer country village has grown, from where the Vintage Railway now operates over 3 km of the remaining branchline.
